Examining Your Eye Health

Comprehensive eye exams are about more than your visual clarity. During our exams, our optometrists also check for subtle signs of eye disease or other conditions that can develop without noticeable symptoms, but put your sight at risk.

We prioritize taking time during your exam to get to know you and your family, and tailor our assessment and treatment recommendations based on your needs, lifestyle, and preferences. We want to dive into any concerns you may have and find solutions to keep your eyes happy and healthy.

Our team is excited to work with you. Book your eye exam today.

How Often Do I Need an Eye Exam?

We recommend annual routine eye exams to all our patients. By attending a minimum of one eye exam a year, we can monitor your eye health and catch signs of eye disease during early stages.

For patients with existing eye conditions or systemic health conditions like diabetes, we’ll recommend an exam schedule specifically tailored to your needs.

If you have any questions about when you’re due for your next exam, feel free to reach out to our team.

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

If it’s your first time at our clinic, we’ll ask you to complete some patient forms, including your health history and general information. Once your forms are complete, you’ll meet with one of our optometric technicians for pretesting.

The pretesting portion of your exam includes digital imaging with our Cirrus camera, and may also include eye pressure tests, visual field testing, and more. These tests help us gain an overall picture of your eye health. We will also dilate your pupils for a clear view inside your eye.

To dilate your pupils, we’ll administer special eye drops. These drops will temporarily widen your pupil so we can see the inside of your eye more clearly. You may find that your eyes are more sensitive to light for a few hours after dilation, so we recommend bringing sunglasses to your appointment. You should also plan not to drive immediately after your appointment.

After pretesting and dilation, you’ll meet with your optometrist. They’ll check the health of your eyes, walk through the results of your pretesting, and check your visual acuity to determine if you need glasses or contact lenses.

Feel free to ask questions at any point during your eye exam. We’re happy to explain the different tests and images, as well as what they mean.

Eye Exams for Children

Our pediatric eye exams follow a similar cadence to our adult eye exams, but include specific testing and tools tailored to the age of your child.

One key difference in our children’s eye exams is the length. Our children’s eye exams take about an hour and a half, because we apply dilation eye drops and allow their eyes to dilate for 45 minutes to get the most accurate refraction test to determine their prescription.

Dilating your child’s pupils allows us to not only get an accurate measurement of their eyewear prescription but also to determine if they’re at risk of developing myopia (nearsightedness) and whether myopia control is necessary.

Eye Exams for Glaucoma Patients

Eye exams may look a little different if you’ve been diagnosed with an eye condition, such as glaucoma. You’ll receive additional testing and a more frequent eye exam schedule.

Glaucoma affects the health of your optic nerve and is often seen with increased intraocular pressure (internal eye pressure). Peripheral vision may be impacted by glaucoma, but changes occur gradually and subtly.

We complete digital imaging of your retina (the inside of your eye) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans to check the health of your optic nerve. We also use digital field testing to objectively monitor any changes to your peripheral vision over time.

Be Proactive About Your Eye Health

Many eye diseases develop without obvious symptoms. An annual eye exam can check your eyes for early signs of eye conditions, for more effective treatment options, and better outcomes.

Additionally, wearing glasses or contact lenses with an outdated prescription can lead to uncomfortable symptoms, such as headaches, eye strain, and eye fatigue. By regularly getting your vision checked, you make sure you’re wearing the most up-to-date prescription for comfortable vision.

Don’t wait until your eyes are bothering you. Book your comprehensive eye exam today.
